 Description:

Jan van Riebeek on the Banknote :

The Dutch East India Company V O C sent Jan van Riebeek to establish a permanent fortified refeshment station at the Cape Of Good Hope. He arrived with his three sailing ships on the 6th April 1652 - The Drommedaris, Goede Hoop and the Reijger. His portrait was featured on all SOUTH AFRICAN BANKNOTES from the 1st issue by the SOUTH AFRICAN RESERVE BANK IN 1921 UNTIL 1992. In 1910 the Union of South Africa was established consisting of the four provinces, namely Cape Province, Natal, Orange Free State and the Transvaal. These provinces are represented on the South African Coat of arms,as can be seen on the reverse of these banknotes. They are depicted on some of the SA Banknotes. English and Dutch became the two official languages with the Dutch being replaced with Afrikaans in 1926.

In 1961, South Africa changed its currency from pound sterling to Rand and cents, and when in the same year the country became a republic, the new currency was retained. The South African Reserve Bank thereafter commenced withdrawing the old Pound Sterling currency banknotes, replacing them with banknotes of the new currency.

THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN RESERVE BANK - THE CENTRAL BANK AND SOLE MONEY ISSUEING AUTHORITY OF THE UNION OF SA. THE  SOUTH AFRICAN RESERVE BANK WAS ESTABLISHED ON THE 17TH DECEMBER 1920 AND COMMENCED OPERATIONS ON THE 30TH JUNE 1921.
