Description: 

The1893 Kruger Half Pond is considered to be a scarce coin to find as its mintage may have been low, with the actual number ever having been established. The Afrikaner farmers moved northward in what is known as the GREAT TREK, which began in 1836 and established the independent Boer Republics of the Transvaal which became known as the ZUID AFRIKAANSCHE REPUBLIEK in 1852 and the ORANGE FREE STATE in 1854. It was during this period of South African history that the ZAR COINAGE was struck.

The final issue of original pound coins was produced in the early months of 1900 from dies bearing that date (these managed to get through from Berlin).  Before Pretoria fell to the British on June 5, the ZAR’s capital was temporarily relocated to Middelburg, and all of the gold and silver stored in Pretoria was carried away to safety. Wartime conditions prevented further coinage of the regular Kruger type of pound and half pound, and this series ended in 1900. 

Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger (10 October 1825 – 14 July 1904), better known as Paul Kruger and affectionately known as Uncle Paul ("Oom Paul") was State President of the South African Republic or ZUID AFRIKAANSCHE REPUBLIEK (Transvaal). He gained international renown as the face of Boer resistance against the British during the South African or Second Boer War.
