FW de Klerk addressed South Africa's Parliament – and amazed the world when it was anounced that Nelson Mandela was to become South Africa's first Democratic President.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (born 18 July 1918), President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. When President Mandela bade farewell to Parliament five years after he was sworn in as South Africa's first democratically elected President, he urged all South African's never to forget their past , but to use it as a tool in overcoming the the challenges still facing the new democracy of the country.

Frederik Willem de Klerk (born 18 March 1936), often known as F. W. de Klerk, was the seventh and last State President of South Africa before the new democracy started, serving from September 1989 to May 1994. De Klerk was also leader of the National Party (which later became the New National Party) from February 1989 to September 1997.
