mintmarked gold coin, with an image of
former President Nelson Mandela with the Union Buildings in the background. The
mintmark which appears on the reverse of the coin, is the official "10
Years of Freedom" logo. The 1/10th
oz 24 carat R5 mintmarked gold coin,
depicts the South African flag with the pre-amble of the South African
Constitution in miniature text formimg the stripes of the flag. the mintmark
on the reverse side, features the words "10 Years of Freedom" The Sterling
Silver R1 coin consists
of a collage of the South African national symbols. Together these three
coins depict all the symbols of the most remarkable event in the history of
South Africa. Description: Nelson Mandela was
arrested soon after
returning from a six-month clandestine trip through Africa and to London on August
5th, 1962, where he
garnered support for the African National Congress' armed wing Umkhonto we
Sizwe.
Coming back from that trip, he was picked up in Botswana by fellow
activist Cecil Williams. Nelson Mandela reported on his trip to comrades in KwaZulu-Natal,
and on his way back to Johannesburg on Sunday 5th
August 1962 with
Williams, they were stopped by the police and Nelson Mandela was taken into
custody.
He was charged with leaving the country without a passport and inciting
workers to strike. He went on trial at the Old Synagogue in Pretoria on 15

Mandela's clan. (Xhosa

born 18 July 1918) served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999,
and was the first South African president to be elected in a fully
representative democratic election. Before his presidency, Mandela was an
anti-apartheid activist, and the leader of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing
of the African National Congress (ANC). In 1962 he was arrested and
convicted of sabotage and other charges, and sentenced to life in prison.
Mandela served 27 years in prison, spending many of these years on *Robben
Island. Following his release from prison on 11 February 1990,
Mandela led his party in the negotiations that led to multi-racial democracy
in 1994. As president from 1994 to 1999, he frequently gave priority to
reconciliation. |
