   Description:

A R5 circulation coin was issued on the 18th of July 2008 to commemorate this event.  The coin features the much loved Nelson Mandela on the reverse of the coin wearing his icon "Madiba" shirt. This is the first time ever that a former President has featured twice on the same denomination and in the same circulation coin series. Nelson Mandela was first depicted on the obverse of the R5 circulation coin issued  in 2000, a year after he left office. 

Each R5 coin has been struck to the highest quality - the edge rimming of the coin features a line pattern, as well as the miniature letters "S A R B" (South African Reserve Bank).

The bi-metal Proof Medallion depicts Nelson Mandela as a young man wearing traditional royal attire. The 1/2 oz, 24 carat gold inner, features the words "90th Birthday" together with the portrait of Nelson Mandela on the reverse side.
