In recent times slabbed population statistics have contributed, to a large degree, in assisting to determine the quality and varieties of slabbed and graded coins available to collectors. Details: 1965 Bronze "Afrikaans" One Cent Coin: Diameter: 19.05 mm Weight: 3.00 grams Mintage: 185 Description: A revised coinage, known as the Second Decimal Series, was introduced for the year 1965. Denominations included 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents. Silver was replaced in coins by cupronickel. Silver R1 were produced as part of this series. Initially the coinage carried the portrait of *Van Riebeeck on the obverse of the coins, and later the state presidents or the South African coat of arms. The country name was given in Afrikaans, English or both. From 1965 to1969 coins had either the Afrikaans wording "Suid Afrika" or the English wording "South Africa". The three rarities of the Union Second Decimal Series are the 1965 R1"Afrikaans", 1965 50 cents "English", and the 1965 1 cent "Afrikaans" (as listed). *Van Riebeeck was born in Culemborg in the Netherlands. In 1651 he was requested to undertake the command of the initial Dutch settlement in the then future South Africa. He landed three ships Drommedaris, Reijger and Goede Hoop at the future Cape Town on 6 April 1652 and fortified the site as a way-station for the VOC trade route between the Netherlands and the East Indies. Van Riebeeck was Commander of the Cape from 1652 to 1662; he was charged with building a fort, with improving the natural anchorage at Table Bay, planting fruit and vegetables and obtaining livestock from the indigenous Khoi people. Slabbed for preservation, thisVERY RARE COIN has been suitably Graded as PF 63BN, thus positioning this particular coin as POP 1 sharing, with only 2 of the other 185 Proof "Afrikaans" coins ever minted. This would then be considered the highest grade known for the 1965 "Afrikaans" coins to date. Therefore only9, of the 1 cent "Afrikaans" Proof coins (including the "Afrikaans - Thick Flan type) have ever been Graded by the NGC (Numismatic Gauranty Corporation) of America. !!!
