 Description:

Set - During the Anglo Boer War (1899 - 1902 ) a group of women in the Bethulie concentration camp adopted the following Bible text as their motto for survival: Matthew 10:29: " Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing and one of them shall not fallto the ground without your Father knowing it?"  these women vowed that if ever South Africa issued a farthing ( 1/4 penny ), they would aspire to have the sparrow - their symbol of faith and hope - depicted on the coin.

Set - The call of the Fish Eagle is probably one of the most familiar sounds associated with South African  wildlife. The fish Eagle occurs in the region south of the Sahara down to the Southern Cape in areas with suitable habitat such as rivers, dams and estuaries.  The Fish Eagle portrayed on the reverse of the South African 2c was modelled by Arthur Sutherland, chief engraver of the South African mint at that time.

Set - the Blue Crane is our national bird and is found throughout the large grassveld ( Savannah ) areas of  South Africa usually near water. Each bird is about 105 cm in height, with distinctive secondary plumes of up to 445cm in length. Our second decimal series,1965 to1990, had the Blue Crane on the nickel 5c and on the third decimal series the Blue Crane was retained on the copper plated 5c, but with a redesigned image. For the first time in numismatic history all eleven South African languages appear on the circulation coins.

Set - The Arum Lily was an original artwork by Cynthia Letty, and was adapted to the 10c coin by Robert MacFarlane. The plant species is also used medicinally by south Africans in various ways. It represents the unique diversity of flora and fauna of our country.

Set - the remarkable  South African Protea Cynaroides was one of the first destinctive symbols that appeared on the Tickey and the Sixpence from 1925 - 1960.  With the introduction of South Africas first decimal series (1961 - 1964 ) the Protea was again depicted on the 2 1/2c and 5c coins, designed bywell known die sinker, Kruger Gray. In1996 the design underwent a slight modification to accommodate a larger "20c" numeral on the coin.
