Malan onthul.

English

Church Square (English) or Kerkplein (Afrikaans), is the historic centre of the city of Pretoria, South Africa.

Church Square was established in 1855 when the then President of the Z A R, Martinus Wessel Pretorius, approached the town planners, the Devereaux brothers, to design and establish a square for market and church attendance purposes. The Church Square was also used as a sports field from time to time. The long jumper Izak Prinsloo was the first South African to attained the world record there,  in 1883. The first church was built and completed on the square in 1857, which burnt down in 1882. A second Refomation Church (Gereformeerde Kerk) was built in 1884 - 85. this church was demolished in 1904 - 05, after the church sold the square in 1899 to the then ZUID AFRIKAANSCHE REPUBLIEK Government, which was then handed back to the city council in 1905.

One of the most familiar landmarks of CHURCH SQUARE is the statue of the then Boer leader and President of the ZAR, PAUL KRUGER, which stands in the middle of the square. The statue was commissioned in 1896, by the prominent SAMMY MARKS, a formost industrialist and friend of Paul Kruger at the time. the Artist Anton van Vouw was the commissioned sculptor. The sculpture was moved from the Pretoria Station in 1954 on the 11th October, to CHURCH SQUARE, and unveilled by the First Minister of South Africa D F Malan.
