1795 NETHERLAND 3 GUILDER

WEST FRIESLAND DAV-1853

MS 61

Slabbed Coins - Graded and Certified by NGC and PCGS.

1795 Netherland 3 Guilder, used historically in South Africa at the time of the Dutch East India Company having colonized the Cape as part of its trading route in the east.

 Description:

1795 NETHERLAND 3 GUILDER WEST FRIESLAND DAV-1853 MS 61 NGC Slabbed

The amount of graded coins comes from the NGC ( Numismatic Guarantee Company ) Population Report. In recent times slabbed population statistics have contributed, to a large degree, in assisting to determine quantities produced, as well as, the quality and varieties of slabbed and graded proof coins available to collectors.

Details:

The Dutch namegulden was a Middle Dutch adjective meaning "golden", [1] and the name indicates the coin was originally made of gold. The symbol ƒ or fl. for the Dutch guilder was derived from another old currency, the florijn, called the florin in English.

The first guilder, a 10.61g .910 silver coin, was minted by the States of Holland and West Friesland in 1680.

States of Holland and West Frisia were the representation of the two Estates ( standen ) (Nobility and Commons) to the court of the Count of Holland. After the United Provinces were formed — and there no longer was a count, but only his "lieutenant" (the stadtholder) - they continued to function as the government of the County of Holland.

The original guilder design featured Pallas Athena standing, holding a spear topped by a hat in her right hand, resting with her left forearm on Gospels set on an ornate basis, with a small shield in the legend. This guilder was divided into 20 stuivers, each of 8 duitenor 16 penningen. The guilder gradually replaced other silver coin denominations circulating in the United Netherlands - florijn (28 stuivers), daalder (1½ guilders or 30 stuivers), rijksdaalder (2½ guilders or 50 stuivers), silver ducat (2½ guilders or 50 stuivers) and the silver rider ducaton (3 guilders or 60 stuivers).

After the Napoleonic wars, the Kingdom of the Netherlands readopted the guilder. In 1817 it became decimalised, with one guilder equal to 100 cents. However, it was not until the 1840s that the last pre-decimal coins (many of which dated back to the 17th century) were withdrawn from circulation,

Silver VOC Coinage

Aside from the numerous varieties of VOC duit, the other major development of 18th Century Indies coinage occurred from 1786, when European powers started issuing colonial silver coinage in greater quantity , finally satisfying local demand (which led to fluctuating local values between large and small silver coins and between silver and copper). The denominations were 10 Stuiver (1/2 Gulden), 1 Gulden and 3 Gulden. Dates range from 1786 to 1791. The Dutch ducaton was valued at 80 stuiver, the various Indian and local rupees at 30 stuiver, and the 8 Real at 64 stuiver.

The Nederland Coin Series used in South Africa during the Dutch occupation of the Cape Colony, Natal, and the ZAR.

TheDutch East India Company (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie or VOC in Dutch, literally "United East Indian Company") was a chartered company established in 1602, when the States-General of the Netherlands granted it a 21-year monopoly to carry out colonial activities in Asia. It was the first multinational corporation in the world and the first company to issue stock. It was also arguably the world's first megacorporation, possessing quasi-governmental powers, including the ability to wage war, negotiate treaties, coin money, and establish colonies.

Statistically, the VOC eclipsed all of its rivals in the Asia trade. Between 1602 and 1796 the VOC sent almost a million Europeans to work in the Asia trade on 4,785 ships, and netted for their efforts more than 2.5 million tons of Asian trade goods. By contrast, the rest of Europe combined sent only 882,412 people from 1500 to 1795, and the fleet of the English (later British) East India Company, the VOC’s nearest competitor, was a distant second to its total traffic with 2,690 ships and a mere one-fifth the tonnage of goods carried by the VOC. The VOC enjoyed huge profits from its spice monopoly through most of the 1600s.

In 1652, Jan van Riebeeck established an outpost at the Cape of Good Hope (the southwestern tip of Africa, currently in South Africa ) to re-supply VOC ships on their journey to East Asia . This post later became a full-fledged colony, the Cape Colony, when more Dutch and other Europeans started to settle there.
