Details: The inscription on the obverse of the coin "CAROLUS II DEI GRATIA" translated means "Charles II by the Grace of God" on the reverse side of the coin the inscription "CAROLUS D G MAG BR FRA ET HI REX" translates as the "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland" In
1663 all hand hammered coinage in The Kingdom of England was stopped, and
the coins were then produced or milled on Blondeau machinery at the Royal
Mint with
dies prepared by two brothers by the name of Roettier. These coins
became known as the Guinea due to the fact that the gold was sourced
from Guinea in West Africa. From
1717 onwards the Guinea value was officially fixed at twenty-one shillings,
after The Great Britain Coinage used during the British occupation of the Cape Colony. The inscription on the reverse of the coin "Charles by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland." Before Charles's restoration, the Navigation Acts of 1650 had hurt Dutch trade by giving English vessels a monopoly, and had started the First Dutch War (1652–1654). The Second Dutch War (1665–1667) was started by English attempts to muscle in on Dutch possessions in Africa and North America. Charles granted the British East India Company the rights to autonomous territorial acquisitions, to mint money, to command fortresses and troops, to form alliances, to make war and peace, and to exercise both civil and criminal jurisdiction over the acquired areas in India. Earlier in 1668 he leased the islands of Bombay for a nominal sum of £10 paid in gold. The Portuguese territories that Catherine brought with her as dowry had proved too expensive to maintain. Dutch East India Company had founded the Cape Colony on the southern tip of Africa in 1652 as a way station for its ships travelling to and from its colonies in the East Indies. Britain formally acquired the colony, and its large Afrikaner (or Boer) population in 1806, having occupied it in 1795 in order to prevent its falling into French hands, following the invasion of the Netherlands by France. British immigration began to rise after 1820. Have this SOUGHT AFTER Coin in YOUR Historical Collection |
