The coinage of Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe, is growing in interest amoungst numismatic collectors, given the countries drastic and controversial collapse of its currency. Initially its early link with the British pound, made it one of the strongest currencies around until it was devalued from US$2.8 to US$2.4 against the dollar in 1967, Rhodesia switched its peg to 1 pound = US$2.8. In 1970, the pound was replaced by the dollar, at a rate of 1 pound = 2 dollars.. The Rhodesian pound was initially pegged to the British pound. By the 1950s, coins of George III, George IV and William IV had disappeared from circulation, Silver coins were replaced by those in cupro-nickel in 1947, and by the 1960s the silver coins were rarely seen.

It also circulated in Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland. The pound was subdivided into 20 shillings, each of 12 pence. In 1932, .925 fineness silver coins were introduced in denominations of 3 and 6 pence, 1 and 2 shillings, and ½ crown (2½ shillings). These were followed in 1934 by holed, cupro-nickel ½ and 1 penny coins. In 1942, bronze replaced cupro-nickel, whilst the silver coins were debased to .500 fineness in 1944 and replaced by cupro-nickel in 1947. Coins were issued until 1954. The coins of the Rhodesian pound were part of the currency of Southern Rhodesia, which changed its name to Rhodesia, following the break-up of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, when the Rhodesian pound replaced the Rhodesia and Nyasaland pound. Owing to the reach of the British Empire, the shilling was once used on every inhabited continent. |
