After a close examination of the coin he noticed the following differences between what is now known as the Coarse beard and the Fine beard Burgersponde. The Coarse Beard as oppposed to the Fine beard was described as follows:- The beard shows four thick front points, the front pair being shorter than the back. The beard is heavier and flatter in curvature. The burr is on the edge of the reverse of the coin. In addition the EIGHT IN THE DATE 1874 APPEARS TO BE A DOUBLE EIGHT IN THE STRIKING OF THE COARSE BEARD COINS. Details: The discovery of alluvial gold in Pilgrims rest in the Northern Transvaal, created the realisation that some of this gold could be used for providing the Zuid Afrikaansche Republic with its own gold coinage - which was the aim of President Burgers to help with the establishment of a nation. Sixteen dies and two punches were prepared by L C Wyon, the modeller and engraver to the Royal Mint as a private commission. The liasing between the varioue parties involved in the manufacture of the coins was undertaken by Mr J J Pratt, the Consul-General for the Transvaal in London. The first 695 Burgersponde were received on the 25th July 1874 with the balance ready on the 14th August 1874 and dispatched to the Transvaal.
