On the 5th June 1900 alll minted silver as well as minted and unminted gold including blanks were removed from the Mint in Middleburg. These were used to pay the troops. the concentric scraper marks were produced by a scraping machine used to reduce the weight of the blanks which were too heavy. Its presence is evidence ( not conformation ) of the genuine nature of the blank, but its absence does not necessarily indicate the opposite since some pieces obviously did not require scraping. |
