* These were struck with the genuine dies that disappeared from the Mint Museum. As the story continues, it is assumed that the coins were struck in Italy or Switzerland. After the sensation of the discovery of these coins, many of them were buried in a garden not too far from where they should have been minted in the first place. They were released in South Africa in 1968, supposedly having been found as part of the "Kruger Millions". Each member, at that time, of the Numismatic Society was given the opportunity of buying these coins at the then unbelievable bargain price of R30-00.

The final issue of original pound coins was produced in the early months of 1900 from dies bearing that date (these managed to get through from Berlin).  Before Pretoria fell to the British on June 5, the ZAR’s capital was temporarily relocated to Middelburg, and all of the gold and silver stored in Pretoria was carried away to safety. Wartime conditions prevented further coinage of the regular Kruger type of pound and half pound, and this series ended in 1900. The Restrike coinage later emerged around 1968.

IN THE STRIKING OF THE KRUGER 1 POND RESTRIKE COINS, ONE OF THE OBVIOUS DIFFERENCES FROM THE ORIGINAL, ONE WILL NOTICE, IS THAT THE BREAST OF THE EAGLE IS FULL, HAVING A GREATER RELIEF ON THE STRUCK AREA OF THE BREAST, AS OPPOSED TO THE SAME AREA ON THE ORIGINAL.  THE EAGLES CLAWS HAVE BEEN RE-ENGRAVED AND ARE CLEARER THAN ON ANY OF THE REGULAR ZAR ( ZUID AFRIKAANSCHE REPUBLIEK ) POND COINS. THE ENGRAVER TOOK ARTISTIC LICENCE AND IMPROVED ON THE ORIGINAL DESIGN ON SOME AREAS OF THE DIES. THE SIZE IS ABOUT THE SAME. THE MILLING IS THE SAME. THERE ARE MANY OTHER DIFFERENCES THAT CAN BE INVESTIGATED AND ARE LISTED IN "THE COINAGE AND COUNTERFEITS OF THE ZUID AFRIKAANSCHE REPUBLIEK"
