Edge: Plain. The gold medal has the S.A. Mint mark for 9ct gold and the silver medal for sterling silver.

Obverse: A family of six settles with their belongings all facing left; one boy pointing. Signed: “T.S.” below left.
Below, text across: “ON APRIL 10, 1820, THE FIRST of 4000 / BRITISH SETTLERS SET FOOT ON
SHORE / AT ALGOA BAY / THESE PEOPLE PLAYED A VITAL / PART IN THE DEVELOPMENT / OF
SOUTHERN AFRICA”.

Reverse: In large letters at the top across: “1820” and at the bottom: “1970”. In the middle with smaller
lettering: “BY CHOICE AND / CONSCIOUS WILL”. The central text is separated above and below
from the dates by a row of flowers. Above: rose (England), protea, thistle (Scotland) and strelitzia
and below: shamrock (Ireland), aloe plant, two leaks (Wales) and two arum lilies. Signed “T.S.”
below the leaks.

Notes: Mintage: 250 cased sets of gold, silver and bronze; 500 individual silver medals and 1000 bronze medals.
The three medal set comes in an oblong red SA Mint case, the silver medal comes in a blue SA Mint case.
