The city of Barcelona hosted the 1992 Summer Olympics. Visitors to Barcelona love to check out the former Olympic grounds. The 1992 Olympics were the first post-soviet games. Consequently, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia, Herzegovina and a unified Germany were able to compete as independent states. A record 10,563 athletes from 172 nations gathered without a single country boycotting the Games. Both Cuba and North Korea returned after 12 years and South Africa was welcomed back after 32 years of isolation, following the national governmentand#39;s denunciation of apartheid racial policies.
