PROOF KRUGERRAND SET

Details:

1968 gold Krugerrands - details apply to all the above

1 oz (33.93 g) with a 916.7/1000 (22-karat) gold purity, a

32.77 mm diameter, and a 2.84 mm thickness.

Description:

1968 Frosted Krugerrands are significant as rare and historically important early proof coins struck by the South African Mint, representing a technical experiment in creating frosted finishes on a modern gold bullion coin. These coveted collector's items are significant for their sharp contrast between a mirror-like field and frosted design elements, their historical significance as one of the first proof issues, and their technical uniqueness during a transitional period of minting techniques.

  • Technical Innovation: The frosted finish was a result of experimenting with French minting techniques, showcasing the South African Mint's pursuit of perfection. These proof coins represent a significant step in the Krugerrand's development, transitioning from pure bullion coins to include collector-focused proof specimens.
  • Historical Context: The 1968 proof coins are some of the earliest proof issues in the Krugerrand legacy, making them historically significant as collectors' items. They embody the early days of the Krugerrand's production and the iconic imagery that would become famous worldwide.
  • Distinctive Finish: The coins exhibit a unique "cameo-like" appearance, with a striking contrast between the frosted design elements and the brilliant, mirror-like surfaces. This contrasts with the standard bullion finish of later Krugerrand coins.
  • Design Elements: The obverse features the portrait of Paul Kruger, after whom the coin is named, and the reverse features the springbok, South Africa's national animal. The bilingual inscription of "Suid-Afrika / South Africa" also adds to the coin's historical context.
