Description:
Gold coins have always represented the ultimate in wealth and prestige. For collectors no other metal can match the quality and the lustre of coins struck in the finest gold.
South Africa ranks among the very few countries where gold coins have been minted as negotiable currency and still remain available for general purchase - allowing collectors to own a share in the country's production of fine gold.
The design and name of the Krugerrand was based on historical coins of South Africa. The obverse depicts the bust of President Paul Kruger who was President of the Z A R , the previous Transvaal province of South Africa, when the Witwatersrand gold was discovered in 1886. The design of the obverse depicts a prancing springbok , a well known South African antelope.
The Krugerrand is unique in that it is legal tender or a valid trading coin without a monetary face value. The face value is 1oz or fractions of it and is traded as such.
