the design and name of the Krugerrand was based on historical coins of South Africa. The obverse depicts the bust of President Paul Kruger who was President of the Z A R , the previous Transvaal province of South Africa, when the Witwatersrand gold was discovered in 1886. The design of the obverse depicts a prancing springbok , a well-known South African antelope.

The Krugerrand is unique in that it is legal tender, or a valid trading coin, without a monetary face value. The face value is 1 oz or fractions of it and is traded as such.
