Ranked in the herd according to their fighting ability, the skin on a Buffalo's neck is up to 5cm thick to protect it during skirmishes for domination with other males. Their curved horns are also used for protection while they use the solid shield of horn that covers the top of its head, called the boss, because it is this part of their body that is used for powerful head butting.
