The Springbok was part of the Coat of Arms of South Africa and was the national sporting symbol until recently. During the design of the then new coin series in 1964, it was therefore considered appropriate to use this
symbol for the R1 coin. The emblem was already well known on the coins
as it had appeared on the 5 Shilling piece since 1947.
