Description:

The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) was established as the Central Bank of the Union of South Africa in 1921. The founding of the SARB was a direct result of the dire monetary and economic situation which existed during and after World War 1. The first Governor of the SARB, Mr W H Clegg, was appointed with effect from 17th December 1920 and the Bank opened its doors for business for the first time on the 30th June 1921. The Bank immediately provided services as 'banker to the banks', and started functioning as custodian of the gold and foreign exchange reserves of the country.

The design of the 90th Anniversary coin commemorates the history of the Bank and how our currency mirrors the changing economic and political developments. Our numismatic history is captured by a collage of coins, being the Gold Sovereign , Mandela R5, Gold Natura Rhino, Nickel 20 cents, Copper Farthing and a 100 Pound Banknote in the design on the reverse.
