The South African government has establishe a network of marine protected areas (MPAs) to conserve South Africa's offshore biodiversity and ensure the sustainable use of its marine resources. In 2016, the four coin series that was introduced in 2013, represents aspects of the south-western Cape's bioregions.
The 50c (2oz) coin portrays the eight-tentacled master of camoflage: the common octopus. These territirial cephalopods make their home in the crevices among the rocky
formations of shallow waters from where they prey on crabs, rock lobsters and shellfish.
