In coin grading, MS stands for Mint State, a term used on the Sheldon Coin Grading Scale for coins that were never circulated and therefore show no wear from use.

The numbers after MS indicate the coin’s overall quality on a scale from MS60 to MS70:

  • MS63 — An uncirculated coin with noticeable marks, scuffs, or weaker luster, but still attractive overall.
  • MS64 — Better eye appeal than MS63, with fewer or lighter contact marks and stronger luster.

Both grades are considered uncirculated and very collectable as a graded coin, but an MS64 coin is typically cleaner and more visually appealing than an MS63.

------------------------------------------------

The 1928 Union of South Africa quarter penny — commonly called the farthing — is one of the key early bronze issues of the Union of South Africa coinage series. Its importance comes from both relative rarity and historical context.

Why the 1928 farthing is important

low mintage production run

The 1928 quarter penny had a notably small production run compared with other South African bronze coins of the era. Because farthings were low-value coins that circulated heavily, many surviving examples are worn, making high-grade specimens especially desirable.

Collectors often seek:

  • Fine to Extremely Fine circulated examples
  • Mint State (MS) examples, particularly MS63 and above
  • Original red or red-brown copper coloration

High-grade pieces can command strong premiums at auction.

Historical significance

The coin belongs to the first fully bilingual coinage system introduced under the Union government. Earlier South African coinage traditions reflected British imperial influence, but by the late 1920s the country adopted a uniquely South African identity.

The 1928 series was groundbreaking because:

  • English and Afrikaans legends appear on these farthings
  • It symbolized political compromise between English- and Afrikaans-speaking communities
  • It established a long-running bilingual pattern used on South Africancoins for decades
