known as the "Panic of 1857".

More than 80 pounds (36 kilograms) of gold dust, along with 3,100 gold coins and 45 bars—collectively valued over $50 million—were recovered from the 1857 sinking of the S.S. Central America. High purity gold

The S.S. Central America, often referred to as the "Ship of Gold," was a 278-foot sidewheel steamer that sank in a hurricane off the coast of South Carolina on September 12, 1857, carrying a massive cargo of California Gold Rush treasure. The ship was travelling from Panama to New York with over 500 passengers and crew, along with approximately 30,000 pounds (over 13,000 kg) of gold in total that had been shipped from San Francisco.

Key Details of the Gold Dust Discovery

  • Source: The gold was transported from California during the Gold Rush era before the ship sank in a hurricane in September 1857.
  • Recovery: The gold dust was recovered during the 2014 salvage operations from the captain's safe and other areas of the shipwreck, often found in original, though deteriorated, miners' packets.
  • Value and Significance: The gold dust, along with the ingots, is considered authentic, high-purity California Gold Rush gold. Some gold dust was recovered inside a saddlebag.
  • Exhibition: The treasure has been displayed in California, including at the Long Beach Convention Center.
  • Condition: Much of the treasure was heavily coated in ocean sediments and iron corrosion (black sand) from the ship's wreckage, requiring extensive cleaning.
