The 20-dollar gold piece designed by Augustus Saint-Gaudens is called a "Double Eagle" because it was worth twice the value of the original $10 gold "Eagle" coin. The term "Double Eagle" was used to distinguish the higher denomination coin, and Saint-Gaudens' design became known as the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle.

The 1925 is nearly always very sharply struck. The lustre and color on most specimens is typically very good to excellent. All specimens are frosty. Although the color varies rather widely, most specimens are in the orange or rose colored gold category. Many examples also have appealing greenish gold iridescence or highlights. The 1927 is one of the most attractive issues of the series in terms of lustre, color and overall appearance. The average 1927 generally has more "eye appeal" than the typical 1924, 1925 or 1926 and is matched in this respect only by the 1923-D and 1928. Most examples are very sharply struck with fully frosty or soft satiny surfaces. Many have slightly rounded rims. The lustre and color are usually excellent to outstanding, and the color is most often a rich greenish or yellow gold.
