Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill (30 November 1874 – 24 January 1965) was a British statesman, military officer, and writer who was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 (during the Second World War) and again from 1951 to 1955. For some 62 of the years between 1900 and 1964, he was a member of parliament (MP) and represented a total of five constituencies over that time

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The 1966 Winston Churchill Gold Medal was likely part of a series of commemorative medallions issued after his death in 1965, often featuring him in profile or with a "V" salute. These medallions were produced by various mints and companies, and others. Some were struck in 22ct gold and came in presentation cases.

Matthey Garrett Pty Ltd, a Sydney-based company, produced commemorative medals, including ones for Sir Winston Churchill, during the late 1960s and 1970s. These medals were part of a broader range of commemorative items the company produced, including those for the 1970 Royal Visit and the opening of the Sydney Opera House in 1973. Matthey Garrett also acted as melters and assayers of gold bars.

"Matthey Garrett" refers to a brand of precious metal products, specifically gold and silver bars and rounds, produced by Johnson Matthey Australia. Johnson Matthey is a company with a long history in precious metals refining, and Matthey Garrett was one of its brands, primarily focused on the Australian market.

Matthey Garrett Pty Ltd (Sydney Refiners) was a company known for its work in refining and manufacturing precious metals, particularly gold and silver, and producing commemorative medals and medallions. They were involved in refining, assaying, and manufacturing gold bars, including those meeting London Good Delivery standards. The company also produced a variety of commemorative medals and medallions, especially for events like the 1970 Royal Visit and the opening of the Sydney Opera House.
