RMS Titanic was indeed a British passenger liner, owned by the White Star Line, a British shipping company. However, it is more accurate to say it was a British-registered passenger liner, as it was built in Northern Ireland by Harland & Wolff. The ship's purpose was transatlantic passage between Southampton, England, and New York City.

The International Mercantile Marine Company, originally the International Navigation Company, was a trust formed in the early twentieth century as an attempt by J.P. Morgan to monopolize the shipping trade.
