Description:

The Cape Leopard Trust (CLT) has worked tirelessly since 2004 to protect the Cape Mountain Leopard’s last remaining stronghold in the Western Cape.

Over the years, a portion of the proceeds generated from each collection of the Natura Series has been ploughed back into conservation and made a significant contribution to the preservation of endangered species. With the launch of the latest coin in the ‘Natura Series’, SA Mint has partnered with the Cape Leopard Trust, who have been instrumental in preserving the leopard’s last stronghold in the Western Cape.

The launch of the coins was commemorated by hauling the vintage "Oom Paul Press" into the Cederberg Mountains where the Cape Leopard are being conserved, to strike the mintmark on the launch set coins.

" But why here, more than a 1 000km from the S A Mint itself? It is the place where conservationist Quinton Martins took his first Cederburg leopard photograph on May 23 2004, using a camera trap. It is a special place for the man who has probably walked every inch of the mountains; who knows every rock, has slept under the stars in this exquisitely desolate place, and can see Zebra grazing in the far, far distance, just because he knows that they are there. He is the person who founded the CAPE LEOPARD TRUST, and is perhaps the reason there are still Leopards thriving in these beautiful ranges."

"The two worlds collide as the S A Mint has chosen his trust as the beneficiary for its "Nocturnal Hunters" series of coins. Its a meeting of minds and mines, and everyone present is caught in the almost primal emotion of it. Scheepers designed the coin, and brought it here to have the final insignia minted on it with the Oom Paul Press - a Leopard paw print with "C L T" ( Cape Leopard Trust ) inscribed below. You can see his interest in palaeontology and history playing out. Oom Paul would be proud." Extract by Peta Scop
