The announcement of the production and distribution of the new coins was made on the 5th July by the Zimbabwean Reserve Bank’s president, who reiterated the gold coins should act as a store of value for the buyer. The coins, which carry no specific denomination, are named “Mosi-oa-Tunya,” ( The Smoke That Thunders) which is the local reference for Victoria Falls, and contain one troy ounce (31.1 grams) of gold. The gold 1/2oz have been minted as well.

Zimbabwe, a gold producer in its own right, saw its gold output increase 86.3% in the first five months of 2022 to 13,171.58 kilograms compared to 7,068.85 kilograms in the corresponding period last year. The Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe’s annual conference in Victoria Falls announced in June that the value of mineral output in the country was at U.S. $6 billion from U.S. $5.2 billion in 2021.  Source: Coin Update

Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site that is home to one half of the Mosi-oa-Tunya — "The Smoke that Thunders", known worldwide as Victoria Falls — on the Zambezi River.

The river forms the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, so the falls are shared by the two countries, and the park is twin to the Victoria Falls National Park on the Zimbabwean side. ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ comes from the Kololo or Lozi language, and the name is now used throughout Zambia and in parts of Zimbabwe.

Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park covers 66 km2 (25 sq mi) from the Songwe Gorge below the falls in a north-west arc along about 20 km of the Zambian river bank. It forms the south-western boundary of the city of Livingstone and has two main sections, each with separate entrances: a wildlife park at its north-western end and the land adjacent to the Victoria Falls themselves, which in the rainy season form the world's largest curtain of falling water. It extends downstream from the falls and to the south-east along the Batoka Gorges.
