South Africans commemorated 25 years of constitutional democracy in 2019

In 2019, to celebrate 25 years of constitutional democracy, the South African Mint and the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) released a commemorative series known as the "SA25" range. The highlight of this collection is a sterling-silver R50 crown coin, which serves as the primary commemorative piece.

The sterling silver R50 coin is characterised by a number of people standing in single file, as if advancing toward a common purpose and goal. The snake-like qualities of the queue of people running into the distance was the primary motivation for the design by Lady Skollie (Laura Windvogel) who drew inspiration from khoisan rock paintings and the element of waiting for a better tomorrow (in a queue).The design featured on this coin represents the great strides made in our nation in 25 years of constitutional democracy including, inter alia, race and gender transformation objectives. With our constitution today, we are all equal before the law and no one can be discriminated against on the basis of race, culture, language, gender, sexual orientation, religion or any other grounds.
