Description:
A revised coinage series was introduced for 1965.
Denominations included 1⁄2, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents and R1. The Silver circulation coins were replaced by nickel.
The 1965 South African 1 Rand (R1) English coin, .800 fine silver coin featuring Jan van Riebeeck on the obverse and a springbok on the reverse. It was part of the second decimal series that replaced the pound system, designed by Tommy Sasseen (T.S.). These coins, often found in proof sets, are highly collectible due to low, limited mintage.
