ULTRA CAMEO

NGC Grade of PF68 Ultra Cameo means a professional coin grading service evaluated a proof coin as having a very high quality of 68 out of 70 on the Sheldon Coin Grading Scale with an intense frost-to-mirror contrast on both sides.

Flypress Mintmark

"Mintmark 2010 Mailship Fly Press Tickey" refers to a highly collectible,

limited-edition South African 2½ Cent Silver Tickey coin featuring a special commemorative "mintmark" (or privy mark).

The "Oom Paul " flypress is a manual screw press machine. During prominent local coin shows, representatives from the South African Mint bring a portable flypress machine (historically nicknamed the "Oom Paul" flypress) directly to the event. Collectors can buy the coin at the venue and witness a specific location initials mintmark (or "privy mark") manually stamped onto the silver coin or an image of the FLY PRESS itself.

Value and Rarity

These coins were manually overstruck at live coin shows, therefore they usually feature a relatively low mintage. The 2010 Mail Steamship Flypress Tickey is a highly sought-after prize for modern South African numismatic collectors.

Description of the Coin

  • The Tickey (2½c): The South African Mint re-introduced the small 2½-cent silver "Tickey" as a non-circulating commemorative proof coin.
  • 2010 Mail Steamship Theme: Released under the "Maritime History of South Africa" theme, this specific 2010 coin design depicts a historic Mail Steamship on the reverse side.
  • RMS Scot: Depicted on the 2010 2½c tickey, famous for setting speed records on the England-to-Cape Town mail run during the late 19th century.

Historical Purpose:

  • Mail and Cargo Delivery: Transported vital mail dispatches, equipment, and freight between Europe and southern Africa.

Grading Designation:

  • PF (Proof): The coin was specially struck using polished dies and planchets for collectors, not for general daily circulation.
  • 68 (The Numeric Grade): On the industry-standard 1 to 70 Sheldon scale, a 68 grade indicates a superb, highly preserved coin. It features a very sharp strike with only minuscule, nearly imperceptible imperfections visible under low magnification.

Ultra Cameo (UCAM): This designation means the coin has deeply mirrored

background fields and heavily frosted raised design elements.

It creates a striking, bold two-tone contrast on both sides of the coin.
