A silver set: A History of Rhodesia refers to a series of commemorative sterling silver medallions or coins, often sold in sets, that depict significant events and figures from the history of Rhodesia. These were produced by Export Products (Pvt) Ltd. in 1967, with specific mintage numbers for the sterling silver sets.

What it is:

  • Commemorative Medallions/Coins:
  • A collection of silver pieces designed to highlight key moments in Rhodesian history, such as the Victoria Falls, the Pioneers, the Federation, and the Unilateral Declaration of Independence. 
  • Limited Edition:
  • These sets were limited editions, with a specific number of sterling silver sets produced, such as 1000 sets as noted in some descriptions. 

Obverse:Busts of historically significant Rhodesians. The legend gives the name and date of birth (and death) in arcs around the bust. All have a ripple effect applied to the field. All are signed: “W.M.”.

Reverse:All are signed: “W.M.”. All are stamped with a sterling silver mark at the foot.

(1) A view from downstream of the Victoria Falls. In an arc above: “. MOSI . OA . TUNYA .” and below “THE SMOKE THAT THUNDERS”.

(2) Within an ornate border, a spiral band of incused text with three lines separating the words: “LIVING HE WAS THE LAND AND DEAD HIS SOUL SHALL BE HER SOUL”. In the centre is a diamond.

(3) A meeting between two Africans and two Europeans under a tree. A third African warrior stands guard on right. The legend above: “THE INDABA TREE”

(4) A memorial monument. The legend above: “THE ALLAN WILSON MEMORIAL” and below between stops: “MATOPOS HILLS”.

(5) Text across: “THE PIONEERS”. Above, two ox wagons. Below, a semi-circle divided into four segments each showing a pioneer.

(6) Façade of a building. Below, a motorcar and across: “1924”. In an arc above: “CECIL BUILDINGS” and below: “FIRST LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY”

(7) Against a background of rays, a map showing the territories of the Federation (Southern Rhodesia, Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland) with a builder’s trowel in the middle dividing the date: “1953”. The legend on a raised band around, above: “FEDERATION OF RHODESIA AND NYASALAND” and below between stops: “1953 – 1963”.

(8) Against a pebbled background, a map of the former territories of the Federation with the British flag on a pole crossed with a native axe in the middle and below that: “1963”. The legend on a raised band around, above: “DISSOLUTION OF THE FEDERATION OF RHODESIA AND NYASALAND”.
