PAUL KRUGER

Paul Kruger was the president of the

South African Republic (Transvaal) who championed the Boer cause against the British and helped establish the precursor to Kruger National Park. He is known as "Oom Paul" (Uncle Paul), lost fingers to a hunting accident with a rifle that exploded, and was a skilled frontiersman who grew up during the Great Trek.

Key Facts

  • President of the Transvaal Republic: Kruger served as the President of the South African Republic from 1883 to 1900.
  • "Oom Paul": He was widely known by the nickname "Oom Paul," meaning Uncle Paul.
  • Boer Leader: Kruger was a prominent leader and symbol of the Boer resistance against British expansionism during the Boer Wars.
  • Great Trek Survivor: His family was part of the Great Trek, a migration by Dutch-speaking settlers to escape British rule, during which he participated in the Battle of Vegkop as a child.
  • Kruger National Park: He was instrumental in advocating for a protected area, which eventually became the large nature reserve known today as Kruger National Park, named after him.

Personal Life

  • Limited Formal Education: Kruger received only three months of formal education in his youth.
  • Family Man: He had a large family, with his second wife bearing him seven daughters and nine sons.
  • Exploded Gun Incident: While hunting, a four-bore elephant gun exploded in Kruger's hands, blowing off most of his left thumb, a detail often visible in portraits of him.
  • Skills: He was a skilled frontiersman, horseman, and guerrilla fighter, who also spoke several African languages fluently.

Legacy

  • Boer Resistance Symbol: Kruger is remembered as a defiant and charismatic leader of his people, embodying a fierce desire for independence.
  • Kruger Park and Krugerrand: His legacy lives on through Kruger National Park, a significant nature reserve, and the Krugerrand gold coin, both named in his honor.
