APPLIES TO THE 2024 AND THE 2025 SET
The fourth decimal coin series became legal tender on 1 January 2023. This coin
series is based on the theme of deep ecology, an ecological philosophy that considers
humankind as an integral part of its environment.
As with the previous coin series, all of South Africa’s 11 official languages are used on
the fourth decimal coin series. On the R1 coin only one language is used, while three
languages appear on the R5 coin and two on the R2, 50c, 20c and 10c coins. To ensure
the use of all 11 languages, the coins will be minted over a set period on a rotational
system basis. SOURCE: SA Mint
The South African Reserve Bank has gazetted the new designs for the 2023 Fourth Decimal Coin Series of South Africa, which became legal tender
from 1 January 2023. The new coins were first announced during a virtual meeting on 31 August, where the cabinet green-lit the new dimension, design, and compilation of the coins. The key change in the next series is that the word “South Africa” will be inserted on one side of the coins and printed in all the official languages.
The coins will be minted on a rotational system with the use of all the official languages being printed onto the coin over a certain period. For the next ten years, the languages will be alternated annually. SOURCE: Business Tech
