Description:
The year 2016 commemorated the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the Eureka Diamond. The first recorded diamond to be found in South Africa was picked up in 1866 by 15 year old Erasmus Stephanus Jacobus on the De Kalk farm near Hope Town on the banks of the Orange River. His mother spotted the shiny stone he used during a game of Five-stones and later gave it to their neighbour, Schalk van Niekerk who was an avid collector of rare and unusual stones.
The Eureka Diamond changed hands many times for over a century and was finally purchased by De Beers in 1967, placed in the Kimberley Mine Museum, and gifted to the people of South Africa. Although the Eureka is not the most valuable diamond to come from South Africa, it is the single most important diamond in South Africa's History as it was the first diamond to be discovered there.
