Description:
Presidential elections were held in the South African Republic between 3 January and 4 February 1898. The result was a victory for incumbent Paul Kruger.
In 1898, the South African Republic, under the presidency of Paul Kruger, issued a gold coin, the "One Pond", which mimicked the British Sovereign in size, weight, and gold content. The obverse featured Kruger's portrait, and the reverse, the arms of the Transvaal Republic.
Why a Kruger Pond Has Value
1. It is genuine historic South African gold. The Kruger Pond was issued by the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek (South African Republic) during the presidency of Paul Kruger, before the Union of South Africa was established. It is therefore both a gold coin and an important piece of South African history.
2. It contains substantial gold. A standard Pond weighs about 7.988 g
and is approximately 22-carat (.916–.917 fine) gold, containing
about 0.2352 troy oz of pure gold.
3. NGC certification adds confidence and collectability
Having the coin authenticated, encapsulated and graded by NGC makes it much easier for collectors to assess and trade. For scarce dates, the population at MS 62 and above can be particularly important.
