2002 CHEETAH
NATURA PRESTIGE SET "WILD CATS OF AFRICA"
The name "cheetah" is derived from a Hindi word, chitti, which means "the spotted one" and seems to indicate that the species once ranged beyond the borders of Africa. Fossil records also prove that both the smaller and larger breeds once exsisted in Eurasia. In 2002, a new theme titled "Wild Cats of Africa" were minted. The cheetah was the first animal to be portrayed on the new Natura coins. The head of a cheetah appears on the obverse of all four sizes of the series. Different scenes from the cheetah's life are depicted on the reverse of the coins. For the first time the 2002 Natura coins will feature a denomination on the reverse of the each coin
2003 LION
NATURA PRESTIGE SET "WILD CATS OF AFRICA"
The Zulu name for the lion is "Ingonyama" meaning "master of all power and flesh". Aside from their sheer power, the strength achieved through family alliances leaves them unmatched as a group. "The Lion - Royalty of Africa", is the second theme in the Natura series: The Wild Cats of Africa. The 2003 theme portrays the king and queen of the savannah. The obverse is a portrait of a dominant male and a dominant female. The coin with its classical features depicts the royalty of the African lion.
2004 CARACAL
NATURA PRESTIGE SET "WILD CATS OF AFRICA"
The name "caracal" is derived from the Turkish word 'krakulak" meaning black ear. The black ears, topped with long black tufts, are one of the caracal's distinguishing features. Caracals are common residents of the arid regions of the western parts of Southern Africa. A portrait of a caracal is depicted on the common obverse. The words South Africa and 2004 form part of the silhouette design of free branches and grass. Each coin captures a different aspect of this solitary hunter's life, on the reverse of the coins.
