South African Coinage is Rich in History

WITHIN THE WALLS OF THE THEN NEWLY OPENED MINT AND BANK, ACTIVITY WOULD SOON COMMENCE WHICH WOULD ENHANCE THE LARGEST INDUSTRY OF THE ZUID AFRIKAANSCHE REPUBLIEK, NAMELY, GOLD PRODUCTION AND COINAGE.

THEN THE BRITISH FORCES CHALLENGED THE TRANSVAAL'S ZUID AFRIKAANSCHE REPUBLIEK AS IT WAS KNOWN
The State Attorney of the ZAR, who, incidentally, was in fact Field Marshal J. C. Smuts, the Auditor-General and the other officials took the coins and gold that Smuts had collected from the ZAR mint, to President Kruger at Middelburg.  The Members of the Volksraad and all highly placed officials realized what the position was then, and co-operated fully with the President.  It was decided by the Government that Kruger should take leave of absence, for about six months, as the days of the burghers’ possession of the railway line were clearly numbered and the chance of Kruger falling into the hands of the enemy could not be taken.  This would mean the remaining Z.A.R. forces would surrender and the Government’s coins
and gold stash would be lost.

Description:

In popular literature , the legend of the Kruger Millions is mostly based on the well known removal of gold from Pretoria by Jan Smuts prior to the occupation by the British forces of the Transvaal's Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek. It seems however, that the gold and the money of the Transvaal Government was moved in phases. The commandeering of the gold by Smuts through "shot and shell" was probably only the removal of the last gold coins minted in the State Mint, together with some blank gold discs prepared for the minting process and some gold in bar form. The amount of gold removed by Smuts was small compared to the  gold commandeered earlier from the train at Vereeniging and the amount of gold mined when Johannesburg was still under the control of the Transvaal Government. A key question is how much of the gold available to the Government was already in the hands of the merchants and the population when Pretoria fell to the British forces.
